UPROOTED
Living in the city causes me to dream of the forests that I used to visit on vacations.
The scent of real pine trees, the hushed silence of a forest…sort of like a cathedral with stained glass windows
and the anticipation of touching the bark of trees centuries older than myself.
There are so many ways to become uprooted.
In Nature, wind takes most of the blame. Giant Sequoias only live on western slopes of the
Sierra Nevada Range in California. They are scarred by fires and hit by lightning. Heavy snow
can break their crowns. Fungi can find a way inside. These giants spire upward 200 to 275 feet
and their circumference can be 80 to 100 feet.
After centuries, some of them fall.
The roots seem so shallow in comparison to what’s above ground.
Fortunately, I have 2 legs, and when I am uprooted, I can replant myself.
Sometimes it is by choice (jobs or travel) and sometimes by force (disasters of family).
The idea of being rooted to a place is alluring and romantic but I am grateful that I have
the ability to replant myself.
